WhatsApp Pink: A New Virus Spreading Through WhatsApp Group Chats
A malicious link is being distributed on WhatsApp groups that pretend to change to a theme of the Whatsapp chat to a pink-coloured one. Beneath the title WhatsApp Pink, the link is, in reality, an effort by hackers to win control over a targeted device.
The newly-discovered Android nasty was first reported by a Cybersecurity researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia (Twitter ID: @Rajaharia). He informed about this malicious on Twitter and wrote “Beware of WhatsApp Pink!! A Virus is being spread in Whatsapp groups with an APK download link. Don’t click any link with the name of #WhatsappPink. Complete access to your phone will be lost”, and also shared several screenshots exposing the interface of the malicious app, which appears to be similar to the original app. It seems to have been first spotted in India, where it was distributed in multiple large chat groups on popular instant messaging services.
The new virus link which is advertised under the name Whatsapp Pink pretends that it can transform the theme of WhatsApp from its iconic green to pink colour. Additionally, awards added features to attract victims. Several WhatsApp users recently reported experiencing such a link on their phones, while many have forwarded it further without understanding its true goal.
Once the installation process is finished and the user clicks on “WhatsApp Pink”, the app disappears itself, declaring that it was never even installed on your device. The victim will next experience a message, to which they need to reply to unconsciously cause the virus to develop further. This link can probably lock the victims out of their WhatsApp accounts or indeed their smartphones in some cases. The specialist advises that the link is critical enough to permit the hacker to earn complete access to your phone and its data.
If you have already downloaded “WhatsApp Pink” you can either delete it through Settings and the App Manager submenu or install a full-featured Android security solution that scans your device and remove it automatically.
